A complete overview of the Digital SAT Math section’s format and topics.
Math Section
This comprehensive guide provides an in-depth look at the structure and content of the Digital SAT Math section. It covers the format, the key topics that are tested, and offers strategies to help you prepare effectively for the exam.
This adaptive approach tailors the test to your skill level, providing a more accurate assessment of your mathematical abilities.
The Digital SAT Math section focuses on four primary content areas:
Linear Equations and Inequalities:
Solve for variables, interpret linear equations, and understand inequalities.
Systems of Equations:
Solve systems using substitution or elimination methods.
Expressions:
Simplify, factor, and expand algebraic expressions.
Absolute Value Equations:
Solve equations involving absolute values.
Quadratic Equations:
Solve quadratic equations by factoring, completing the square, or using the quadratic formula.
Polynomials:
Perform operations with polynomials, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
Exponential Functions:
Understand and manipulate exponential expressions and equations.
Nonlinear Equations and Functions:
Solve complex equations that go beyond linear models.
Ratios, Rates, and Proportions:
Solve problems involving these relationships.
Percentages:
Calculate percent increases and decreases.
Data Interpretation:
Analyze information presented in tables, graphs, and charts.
Probability and Statistics:
Understand basic statistical measures and probability concepts.
Lines, Angles, and Triangles:
Understand properties of angles, triangle classifications, and the Pythagorean theorem.
Circles:
Calculate circumference, area, arc length, and sector area.
Area and Volume Calculations:
Work with formulas related to two-dimensional and three-dimensional figures.
Trigonometric Ratios and Identities:
Use sine, cosine, and tangent ratios in right triangles and apply key identities.
These content areas are integrated throughout both modules with questions that gradually increase in complexity.
The Digital SAT Math section features two main question types:
Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQs):
Approximately 75% of the questions. Each MCQ provides four answer choices.
Student-Produced Responses (SPRs):
Around 25% of the questions require you to enter your answer independently without any choices.
This combination is designed to assess both your problem-solving skills and your ability to generate accurate solutions independently.
This flexibility enables you to choose the tool that best suits your problem-solving approach. However, even though calculators are permitted on all questions, some problems may be more efficiently solved by relying on mental math.
Approximately 30% of the Math questions are set in real-world contexts. These questions require you to apply mathematical concepts to scenarios drawn from science, social studies, and everyday life, testing your ability to interpret and analyze practical information.
To excel in the Digital SAT Math section, consider the following strategies:
Understand the Format:
Familiarize yourself with the adaptive structure and question types to know what to expect on test day.
Master Core Concepts:
Focus on the four main content areas—Algebra, Advanced Math, Problem Solving and Data Analysis, and Geometry and Trigonometry—to build a strong foundational understanding.
Practice with Real-World Problems:
Enhance your ability to apply mathematical skills in various contexts by working on practice questions that mimic real-life scenarios.
Utilize Official Resources:
Engage with practice materials provided by the College Board to simulate actual test conditions and track your progress.
