How to manage SAT accommodations for your students.
SAT Help for Educators
Ensuring that students with disabilities receive appropriate accommodations for the SAT is crucial for equitable access to college admissions. As an educator, understanding the application process, eligibility criteria, and timelines will enable you to support your students effectively throughout their SAT journey.
Students may qualify for SAT accommodations if they have a documented disability that significantly impacts their ability to take standardized tests under standard conditions. Common qualifying conditions include:
While students with an Individualized Education Program (IEP) or a 504 Plan are often eligible, additional documentation may be required to substantiate the specific need for accommodations.
Provide current and comprehensive documentation of the disability, which may include:
Timely submission of the accommodations request and supporting documentation is critical. For example, for the May 3, 2025 SAT, all applications and required documentation must be received by March 14, 2025. Missing deadlines may result in accommodations not being approved or implemented on test day.
The College Board offers various accommodations to address different needs, including:
Note that some accommodations might be implemented differently on digital tests compared to paper-based tests.
For the digital SAT, accommodations are integrated into the Bluebook™ testing application. When a student with approved accommodations logs in, their specific support settings are displayed. It is important to ensure that students are familiar with the digital tools and any assistive technology they will use on test day.
If a student has been previously approved for accommodations on College Board exams (e.g., PSAT/NMSQT, AP Exams), they typically do not need to reapply for the same accommodations. However, educators should confirm with the SSD coordinator to ensure that all previous accommodations are appropriately documented and carried over.
If an accommodations request is denied, consider the following steps:
