Understand the penalties for SAT security violations.
Test Security and Fairness
The College Board strictly enforces security policies to preserve the integrity and fairness of the SAT. Failure to adhere to these rules can lead to severe penalties. This document outlines the primary violations, potential repercussions, and additional considerations for students.
Violations of SAT security protocols include, but are not limited to, the following actions:
Using Unauthorized Materials
Accessing notes, textbooks, or any electronic devices during the test or designated breaks is strictly prohibited.
Impersonation
Allowing someone to take the test on your behalf or taking the test for someone else constitutes a serious violation.
Sharing Test Content
Discussing or distributing test questions, answers, or any exam content before, during, or after the test breaches confidentiality rules.
Tampering with Testing Software
Any attempt to interfere with or bypass the security features of the Bluebook testing application is considered an act of misconduct.
Unauthorized Communication
Communicating with others, including via electronic devices during the exam or breaks, disrupts the secure testing environment.
The College Board enforces a range of penalties for security breaches:
Score Cancellation
Test scores may be invalidated permanently, and no refund will be provided for the exam fee.
Dismissal from the Test Center
Students violating security rules may be removed from the exam location without the opportunity to complete the test.
Ban from Future Testing
Depending on the severity of the violation, students may face a ban from taking not only future SATs but also other College Board exams, such as AP and CLEP tests.
Notification to Institutions
Violations may be reported to high schools, prospective colleges, and guardians, potentially impacting the student’s academic opportunities.
Legal Action
In cases of serious misconduct, including impersonation or theft of test content, legal proceedings may be initiated against the student.
No Refunds
If a student is dismissed or scores are canceled due to a violation, the SAT fee will not be refunded.
Monitoring and Reporting
The College Board actively monitors testing sessions and encourages the reporting of any suspicious behavior to ensure adherence to security policies.
Policy Agreement
By registering for the SAT, students agree to comply with all established testing rules and policies, acknowledging the consequences of any violations.
